Reducing Mental Health Stigma and Discrimination in Mental Health Services

See Me’s Diagnostic and Improvement Framework is designed to help mental health services to identify, understand, and reduce mental health stigma and discrimination experienced by people with mental health problems and illness.

Scotland’s public sector renewal and reform agenda presents an opportunity to progress meaningful change in how services are designed, delivered, and experienced. Reducing mental health stigma and discrimination is fundamental to providing safe, equitable, person-centred mental health care. But how can services turn commitments to equitable access and care into action?

See Me’s Diagnostic and Improvement Framework provides a practical and structured way for services to:

  • examine how stigma and discrimination operates across key improvement areas,
  • identify where stigma and discrimination contribute to inequitable experiences and outcomes,
  • plan and implement practical, measurable improvement.

The framework is for anyone involved in the design, leadership, delivery or improvement of mental health services. It follows a two-stage improvement process, with ongoing learning and action.

If you would like to test out the framework in your service with See Me's support please contact Rachel Gray, Programme Manager - Mental Health Services rachel.gray@seemescotland.org

Campaigns and Activities

A great place to start tackling stigma and discrimination in the workplace is by raising awareness, opening up conversations and showing that mental health is important to all of us. We have a variety of fun and engaging campaigns and activities which can teach people about mental health stigma, and get them talking to each other about it.
