A stigma-busting spoken word night is returning to Glasgow’s southside in the New Year.

The third Speakin’ Oor Mind event, designed by See Me and its volunteers, will showcase local spoken word talent while exploring the topic of mental health stigma.

Speakin’ Oor Mind was created as part of the 2023 Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival (SMHAF). Created by See Me volunteers, the event provides an opportunity to showcase their creative talents and open the mic to the audience.

See Me volunteer Antje Bothin, who performed at the last Speakin’ Oor Mind event in August, says that being a part of the event has been a positive experience for her.

Antje said: “I enjoyed taking part in the last Spoken Word event. These Open Mics are a great opportunity to perform and showcase your poetry to new people. Everyone was really supportive.”

Taking place in Glasgow’s Glad Cafe, the event provides a great opportunity for experienced performers and newcomers alike to share experiences and thoughts in a creative way , and remove some of the stigma that still exists around mental health.

Debbie Sangster, lived experience participation officer at See Me, said: “Speakin’ Oor Mind provides a really safe, supportive environment to explore the issue of mental health stigma in a creative way.

“Our last two events have showcased some incredible talent, sharing their experiences through really moving, impactful spoken word and poetry.

“Whether you’re looking to participate yourself or have a night out to experience some fantastic local talent, we really hope you can join us in January.”

The next Speakin’ Oor Mind event will take place on Thursday 9 January from 6.30pm-8.30pm at the Glad Cafe, 1006A Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, G41 2HG.

This is a free event with no ticket necessary, but space is limited so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
