See Me backs Scotland Demands Better call to end poverty

Posted by See Me, 15 August 2025

A campaign is demanding action from politicians for better jobs, affordable living and better social security.

Scotland Demands Better, coordinated by the Poverty Alliance, is a call to action for change.

From the cost of living crisis to bettering public transport – individuals and organisations are taking a stand and demanding political action.

What is Scotland Demands Better?

The campaign asks for the people of Scotland to come together and put pressure on politicians to make the changes needed for a society where every household can thrive and prosper.

On Saturday 25 October, people from Shetland to Selkirk, Argyll to Angus will join a march in Edinburgh.

What are the demands?

  • Better jobs for everyone who needs one, with fair conditions and wages that pay the bills.

  • Better investment for life’s essentials, like affordable homes, good public transport, a thriving natural environment and strong public services.

  • Better social security so that all of us have a foundation for the future.

Why are we supporting the campaign?

Poverty and mental ill health are interconnected.

Experiences of poverty and the stigma associated with poverty is a cause of mental distress. People living in poverty and experiencing mental ill health have less access to services and support than those who can afford to pay for them.

Often people in power use language and create policies that deliberately stigmatise people with mental ill health and mental illness, people living in poverty and people accessing welfare benefits.

Stigma is used to disempower and dehumanise people who are made poorer and more ill by an increasingly unequal society. Deliberately stoking feelings of shame and blame keeps people isolated and makes it harder for people to organise and advocate for change.

Scotland Demands Better offers an opportunity for organisations and individuals across Scotland to come together and demand change.

See Me is joining organisations and groups advocating for disability rights, racial justice, environmental justice, gender equality and many other issues.

We recognise that mental health and mental health stigma can’t be understood in isolation from other stigmatised identities and experiences, including poverty stigma.

We demand change which positively impacts people and communities harmed by inequality and stigmatisation.
