New video library launched to help staff working with young people tackle stigma

We have launched a range of new videos from young people with lived experience targeted to help those working in education settings learn how to reduce stigma and discrimination.

Developed with a school setting in mind, See Me worked closely with young people to design and produce a suite of videos that cover important topics, from what mental health stigma and discrimination sounds like in schools to suggestions for creating a stigma-free future in education.

The 13 videos feature 16 to 25-year-old volunteers and youth consultants who share their experiences of having a mental health problem while at school.

With this resource library, See Me hopes to ensure lived experience voices remain at the centre of school resources, and further offer more learning about stigma and discrimination and what we can do to make a difference to reduce it in education settings.

Nia, one of the volunteers who took part in creating the videos, said: "I hoped by getting involved with the videos I would be a part of the overdue change See Me is bringing to schools.

“My hope for the videos would be that young people see that it is possible to bring about change and continue to do so. I also hope that more teachers and decision-makers use their position to hold stigma accountable.”

Claire Jennings, See Me’s project officer for education and young people, said: “It is great to see these videos being launched as they will be a valuable lived experience resource for schools to learn from.

“I hope the videos will support others to learn more about stigma and discrimination from a young person’s perspective and what can support our schools to be mental health inclusive.

“Huge thanks goes to all the volunteers and youth consultants who have participated in the development and filming of these videos, I hope they are proud of these great resources that will hopefully bring positive change to schools.”
